Today was a blessed Sunday at Christ Church. Ray preached a wonderful sermon on 2 Corinthians about seeing with spiritual eyes. He based it on the knowledge of our own redemption - that we know that we are saved – something we don’t have to earn – and we know that there is a spiritual life and spiritual reality beyond our vision. He then walked us through the places in the church where we have seen spiritual realities in the physical things of the church—like the sanctuary light, the Bible Story time rug for our kids, the pulpit where Joan led morning prayer, the altar, the baptismal font where so many people felt the Spirit as Paula was baptized.
At the same time we had a surprise homecoming from Carole! She was visiting from Florida and God brought her home to us just in time to hear Ray’s sermon! She in turn was inspired to let us know about her own experience with spiritual realities, as she read the Gospel of John to her mother-in-law, and saw her so peaceful and sure as she left this world to meet her Savior in the next.
After church we met with the Sunday School teachers and parents, and started planning for our Sunday School room makeover. The parents talked about how important it was for them that the kids learned the stories of the faith. We also talked about how empowered the children of our parish are to acolyte, read, or just be themselves in the service – all of these are also the physical manifestations of a spiritual reality – the Holy Spirit at work in our church. We also talked about adult education – and how all ages wanted to know more about our church service and wanted more opportunities to explore the Bible.
All in all, a full day – this next Sunday we celebrate our Sunday School and our teachers. Join us as we continue to explore what unseen spiritual things are happening in our church through the seen – the Spirit through the stuff we do – the love of God through our reading of the Gospels and through our time spent with each other.
